About Frances
Frances Bildner
I paint from my imagination. Much of my work stems from my subconscious and draws inspiration from both the Abstract Expressionists and German Expressionists.
The most important element for me in painting is colour. Everything I want to say is translated through colour and movement. I use colour in quite an emotive way.
I have sold to private collectors, offices and restaurants, and have exhibited in Europe and the United States.

Frances Bildner, Artist Statement
Colour is not a tool I use — it is the language I speak. For over two decades I have worked as a painter driven by a single conviction: that colour, deployed with full commitment and without apology, can transform the atmosphere of any space it inhabits and the emotional state of anyone who encounters it.
My practice moves between two modes that are, to me, expressions of the same impulse. In the gestural works, colour arrives as pure energy — sweeping, layered, unplanned. The canvas becomes a record of decisions made at speed, each mark responding to the last. In the more structured compositions, colour is held within architectural forms, allowed to breathe and to press against its neighbours. Both approaches begin in the same place: not with an image in mind, but with a feeling.
I have been shaped by the cities I have lived in — Buenos Aires, London, New York. Each brought a different quality of light, a different tempo, a different relationship between the built environment and human feeling. These places do not appear literally in my work, but they saturate it. The heat and vibrancy of Buenos Aires, the layered density of London, the sheer ambition of New York — all of it is in the paint.
I paint large. Scale matters to me because colour at scale behaves differently — it stops being decorative and becomes environmental. When a painting fills your peripheral vision, you are no longer looking at it; you are inside it. That is the experience I am working towards.
My work is held in private and corporate collections across Europe and the United States. I accept commissions and welcome conversations with collectors, galleries, and institutions who believe — as I do — that serious colour has a serious role to play in the spaces where we live and work.
